The Future with RFID
Wednesday, 31 August 2011 14:23

RFID technology has taken off so quickly, it is truly remarkable to look back on how far we have come. But, for a rather interesting thought experiment, let’s not look to the past, but rather to the future.

As dad wakes up in the morning, he groggily walks to the kitchen and waves a wristband in front of the coffee maker, which gets his specified beverage brewing while he takes a shower. When he steps in the shower, RFID technology reads that it is him and adjusts the heat to his personally set optimal temperature. After the shower, he decides on breakfast. Knowing he is on a diet, yet too mentally weak to resist, he attempts to remove a pack of donuts from the pantry. Yet, barely has it left the shelf when the pantry tells him in a sweet yet firm voice, “You better not Dave, I’ll tell Marie.” Knowing his wife would not approve, he puts back the donuts and reaches for his health-bran cereal instead. Suddenly, the quiet of the morning is broken by the sound of a car alarm next door. Dave looks out the window to see a punk kid running away from his neighbor’s car. With the RFID smart technology installed in nearly every car these days, it is nearly impossible to get in a car, much less start it, without being programmed as one of the car’s owners. As Dave leans back and takes a steaming sip of his coffee, he smiles to himself. It is going to be a great morning.

While this example may seem far-fetched, ask yourself this question. Is the technology really that far off? No, in fact most of the technology is already here. All that is needed is for the price of tags and readers to decrease before we see creative (if not quite this extravagant) uses for it in our everyday lives. The future may not be as distant as you believe.
