Is RFID going “Quirky”?
I recently read an article from Entrepreneur.com http://www.entrepreneur.com/article/220045 which speaks of Quirky, a collaborative innovation based company that creates consumer products from everyday “armchair” inventors. This quickly got me to thinking. This is where RFID is going.
Now stick with me. You might be wondering, “What do RFID and consumer products have in common?” Well, let’s think about it. There is a rush of new creation caused by someone (being in this case Quirky) allowing everyday citizens to use their innovative skills. He provided them the means to take what was already rolling around in their minds and put it into practice.
I believe RFID is going to be this new phenomena. Let’s consider for a moment. RFID is being used in surgical inventory management, asset management, personnel tracking, customer tracking, marketing efforts, social media integration, customer experience enhancement, the list goes on and on. RFID is to management and business owners what Quirky is to “armchair” inventors. So many ideas that they always thought would be cool to integrate is now a reality.
Disney’s cancer centers can customize a room instantly to make kids smile. Beach resorts can have massive inbound marketing with their RFID and Facebook integration. Commercial ovens can send RFID temperature sensors through conveyor belt ovens and know the temperature the entire time. Cruise liners now incorporate RFID enabled bottles which can be refilled whenever desired throughout the ship. Hospitals can now ensure that expired equipment is never used through RFID inventory control systems. Marathon runners can see customized messages from loved ones when they pass certain RFID reading points in the race.
The opportunities and possibilities have exploded throughout the last couple of years. I personally was shocked when my library had RFID enabled checkout, allowing librarians to be more active and helpful to eager readers. It makes the whole library trip more stream lined and enjoyable.
So, if you are a manager, business owner, or an “armchair” inventor, take advantage of the new opportunities that technology is creating each day. Be one of the “firsts” and implement your solution in an innovative way. It may be the best thing you ever did.
