RFID the new way to rent a car

RFID refuses to take a backseatRFID car_keys

Have you ever had to go through the absolutely grueling process of renting a car? The service can be extremely friendly, but the process is still extremely extensive and painful. This was the motivating thought behind Avis Rent A Car’s new on-location car rental system.

The system, created by I.D. Systems is made up of two parts. The first part, called a Motor Vehicle Asset Communicator (MVAC), is installed into the car itself and runs off the car’s battery. The second part, called a Wireless Asset Manager (WAM), is a RFID transceiver which runs off of a 110-volt power source.

The MVAC is the backbone of the system. It can control the locking mechanisms within the car, measure the distance traveled and gas used during each rental, as well as sending and receiving RFID information from the WAM.

The WAMs main task is to transmit an ID code to the MVAC in the selected car, unlocking the doors. It also receives information from the MVAC concerning miles driven, gas used, etc. once the car is returned.

This system allows for car rental locations to be completely isolated and automated. It works like this. A car rental location is set up at, say, an airport. When a business person is traveling they can complete the rental transaction online. This gives the customer a PIN number. When the customer reaches the localized rental location, they can upload the PIN number to the website. Then, through a cellular connection, the WAM is triggered to signal the unlocking of the car doors. The customer finds the keys in the ignition and is on his way.

These systems are planned to be released at large companies (where many car rentals occur) as well as community locations such as airports. Customers can even return the car to a different automated location than where the car was originally taken. This is not the only improvement to customer experience, however. First, there is no line, no waiting. You merely upload the PIN number and drive off. Also, all the time that would be taken filling out paperwork and insurance forms are handled online beforehand, causing a great increase to customer experience and a great decrease in time spent by the customer.

Is that not one of the most creative uses of RFID? Think about the possibilities. What other daily tasks can be automated for more flexible usage? Think about the labor savings that Avis can bring in by not having to staff as many facilities. The benefits of this system are incredible!
