| Should Schools Track Students with RFID? |

The blog post above is available to be read entirely here: New American blog. You can form your own opinion whether this is a good practice or not. We have seen the many benefits of RFID technology for a wide range of projects. However, these projects include tracking cattle, so we understand the comments related to that task. But security is certainly the main issue I take away from this article. So I believe the most important issue to address when any RFID professional develops a people project is that of security. Most people seem to be concerned about that issue. Some may have concerns about tracking within a facility. I believe security must be addressed before implementation. However, if you have ever chaperoned a teen event, you can share the frustration of keeping track of where the children are. I recall volunteering for teen dances when my daughters were that age. In a split moment they can move to someplace that is not secure for them. They just don’t think about it. And in that moment you can freak out big time, until they are located. Would monitoring the movement in a school or at an event improve security for them at the expense of privacy? That needs to be discussed and concerns need to be addressed. But the security of information is a real concern. What can be done? From a business point of view, when there is a problem to be solved, there is opportunity. So what can the RFID community do to solve this problem and ease concerns? |
