A Primer on Food Safety, Expenditure, and Process

The United States has one of the lowest incidences of foodborne illness in the world. Yearly, about 1 in 10 people around the globe get sick from food. That’s 10% of the world’s population. Those of us in the U.S. are fortunate to have food safety regulations implemented and overseen by the USDA & FDA.  At present, the U.S. has the safest, most secure and abundant food supply of any nation in the world, in large part because of the hard work of food production and processing professionals.

According to the data gathered by the World Economic Forum, Americans spend the least amount of yearly household income on food; a mere 6.4%.

This puts the U.S. among the eight countries in the world that spend less than 10% of their household income on food. The other seven countries are; Singapore, United Kingdom, Switzerland, Canada, Ireland, Australia, and Austria. Excuse the pun, but here’s some food for thought; the country that spends the most on food is Nigeria. They spend 56.4% of their yearly household income on food.

Think about it. Most of us take for granted the neatly packaged foods and beverages we have at our fingertips, not giving a thought to what goes into the process. We have a vast array of choices.

Food processors like Maple Leaf Foods, Tyson, and Belmont—to name a few–have a huge responsibility to provide excellent quality and safe foods. A great deal of effort is involved along the way and most companies are looking for ways to increase efficiency. The behind the scenes processes and technologies that are being implemented by the food industry include everything from Blockchain to Wyze Temp®  with Cloud solutions.

Later this month Wyze Temp® will be featuring our growing suite of wireless temperature sensors at  Process Expo  in Chicago.

This show gathers companies from around the world to see and experience the latest technologies and innovations related to every area of the food and beverage industry. This is the opportunity to learn more about machines, safety issues, products, processing, and packaging. The goal is to make this mind-boggling industry run more smoothly and efficiently so that, ultimately, you and I can continue to eat and drink with confidence.
